For the last five years, I’ve ridden a bike at least three times a week — a stationary bike, that is. I got on a real bike once last year, and then my heart started acting up and I never did it again.
Cardio is my downfall. I hate doing it, and with my heart issues, it’s the one thing I know I have to do. It’s one of the main reasons I chose to do the whole triathlon thing.
So today, to get started on my plan, my son offered to take me out for a bike ride. He’s a pretty hard-core cyclist and I know that this was not a fun outing for him, but I am very grateful to him for spending the time with me. I borrowed his mountain bike, and let me tell you… by the time we got to the end of our block I was ready to turn around and come home.
The original plan was to ride out to the university and then turn around, but I only made it as far as the first foot bridge that led onto to the bike path. By then I really was ready to turn around and come home. I haven’t used my nitro this much in one day since I started going to the gym last summer. (Have I mentioned how much I hate cardio lately?)
But I made it. What we thought was about a 2km ride turned out to be 5 km when we got home at put the route into Google Earth. And it was 50 minutes of good exercise, with a few stops for me to catch my breath and take some pictures. Not bad for an old gal who hasn’t been on a bike in 20 years eh?
Anyways, here’s a couple shots from the ride. One of me (I’m using this as my “before” picture), and one of my son waiting patiently for me to catch up. :)
